Rituale und Grabbeigaben für das Gedenken seit der Antike
Die Erstellung von besonderem Gedenkschmuck blickt auf eine uralte Tradition zurück. Sie bietet seit jeher den Hinterbliebenen etwas Bleibendes für ihren Trost und ein kleines Stück Unendlichkeit, wohl wissend, dass das Leben endlich ist.
In den antiken Bestattungskulturen wurden die Schmuckstücke jedoch noch in erster Linie als persönliche Grabbeigaben verwendet. Sie sollten dem verstorbenen Menschen als Glücksbringer im Jenseits dienen. Ob Fingerring, Amulett, Medaillon oder Haarnadel als Beigabe für die letzte Reise: Die Hinterbliebenen fühlten sich auf diese Weise mit ihren Verstorbenen besonders verbunden.
In der heutigen Zeit haben Erinnerungsschmuckstücke, wie z. B. die Fingerprints, durch ihre persönliche Prägung und Verarbeitung einen wichtigen Stellenwert im Hinblick auf die Trauerbewältigung. Die Angehörigen erhalten ein bleibendes Unikat für ihre Erinnerung. Es kann am Körper getragen werden, z. B. als Kettenanhänger oder Fingerring, oder man bewahrt es an einer besonderen Stelle auf.
Die Totenmaske
Bereits in den antiken Bestattungskulturen spielte die Erstellung von Totenmasken eine bedeutende Rolle. Die wohl prominenteste Abformung eines Gesichts ist die Maske des Pharaos Tutanchamun. Die entsprechenden Gipsabgüsse können noch heute im Museum in Kairo bewundert werden.
Die Ägypter glaubten an das Leben im Jenseits nach dem irdischen Tod. Die Totenmaske diente als hochwertige Gesichtsmaske, die die Gesichtszüge der Verstorbenen möglichst authentisch erhalten sollte. Mögliche Verwechslungen sollten dabei ausgeschlossen werden. Für die Ägypter war das wichtig, da nach ihrer Vorstellung über das Jenseits die Seele eines verstorbenen Menschen nur dann in den Sechet-iaru übergehen konnte, wenn ein Gott die menschliche Seele nach dem Tod dem Körper zuweisen konnte. Gleichzeitig hatte die Maske eine schützende Funktion. Die Herstellung der Totenmaske galt als besonderes Gedenkritual, das in der Regel der Obrigkeit, wie z. B. den Pharaonen, vorbehalten war.
